Get in Shape With Elliptical Exercise Machines

Elliptical exercise machines have become very popular over the last several years, and for good reason. Just go to any gym these days and you will likely see several elliptical exercise machines, and there will usually be as many people using them as any other machine. For years, the treadmill was the main cardio exercise machine in the gym and at home, and it is still a great exercise tool. The stationary bike has also been around for a long time, and is still a great choice today (I have a treadmill and a bike at home). However, elliptical exercise machines offer a low impact and high calorie burning workout that will exercise and tone all the major muscle groups at once.

Cross country skiing is a great exercise, utilizing all major muscle groups with very low impact. The original elliptical machines were inspired by and designed to simulate cross country skiing. This offered a great exercise method to the masses, even if you lived far from any snow covered mountains on which to ski. It seems that over the years, the elliptical machine design has changed a little to more closely simulate a jogging motion, which is a more circular motion with the legs.

The jogging motion of the legs, along with the upper body workout when utilizing the poles, effectively works all of the major muscle groups at once. This allows for a very efficient, low impact workout that very quickly gets your heart to an aerobic zone, and allows you to burn more calories in a shorter period than many other machines. At the same time, you are toning the major muscle groups. As you exercise, you are creating leaner, stronger muscles, which will in turn burn more calories even when not exercising.

For comparison, the next time you are at the gym, keep track of how many calories you burn while exercising on an elliptical machine as compared to a treadmill and a bike. In general, if you exercise at about the same intensity, you should burn quite a bit more calories on the elliptical machine. That being said, I know for a fact that I can burn more calories in a cycling class, but that is a much more intense workout than normal. Also, I realize that the serious runners out there can pound out many calories on a treadmill cranked up to high speed, so don't think that I am saying that you can't get good workouts on these machines. I actually use all three, as a way to work different muscles at different intensities. However, as stated, if you workout with the same general intensity on all three machines, you will most likely burn more calories using the elliptical machine.
